What a let down. Just one week after the Saints defeated DeLand putting themselves in a three way tie for firs place in the District 1 8A division, Sandalwood stumbled last Thursday on the road to Flagler Palm Coast. The loss all but eliminates the Saints for the playoffs this season. Baring a miracle, Sandalwood will be home for the holidays this season.

What hurts the most is the manor in which the the Bulldogs defeated the Saints. With just over two minutes left to play, Marcel Williams entered the game as the Bulldogs Quarterback, replacing injured freshman starter Thomas Dalton. Williams lined up in the wildcat formation, walked to the sideline appearing to be talking with his coach when Wide Receiver Willie Gardner motioned to the back field and snapped the ball. Williams took off down the sideline wide open, hauling in an uncontested Gardner touchdown pass.

The play has become a bit of a controversial topic. Questions regarding whether Williams stepped off the field prior to the ball being snapped (in which a WR must return to the field and line up between the numbers in order to be ruled an eligible receiver) has come into question. But the ruling on the field was a touchdown, and now the slim playoff hopes for Sandalwood will depend on the results of Friday nights games.

The first step of course will be Sandalwood taking care of business tonight verses Spruce Creek. The Hawks (2-6) are not on the same level; the Saints clearly have more talent than Spruce Creek, unfortunately it takes more than just talent to win games; last week being a clear example of that. But even without their starting Quarterback, the Saints should win this one easy. Well worry about specifics of how Sandalwood can make it into the playoffs if a scenario is viable next week, right now lets just get a win tonight over the Hawks.

Kickoff for tonight's game at Spruce Creek is set for 7pm. Be sure to check back next week to get an updated Saints' playoff picture and preview of Sandalwood's home game versus Ed White High School .
