Welcome to the latest edition of “Gus’ Tiers” at 1010XL/92.5 FM!
Each Wednesday, I’ll be using Tiermaker dot com to create a 100% correct ranking of a timely subject related to the Jacksonville Jaguars/NFL landscape.
For this week’s Tier, however, I took a break from positional rankings to bring you the very best foods to consume on the Fourth of July.
S: Burgers
My favorite food item on the planet. Though it certainly isn’t the healthiest or most ethical option out there, there is nothing I’d rather see on my dinner plate, especially on the Fourth.
A: Hot dogs, sausages, brisket, ribs, corn on the cob, baked beans
These are the next items I’m adding to my plate. Hot dogs are actually kinda gross unless you happen to be at a barbecue or a ballpark, so in this case they’re a delicacy. My next three meats are sausage, brisket and ribs; my go-to sides are corn on the cob and baked beans.
B: Pork chops, pulled pork, mac and cheese, dinner rolls, peach cobbler, apple pie
Pork chops and pulled pork, as well as mac and cheese and dinner rolls, fall into the category of foods I want in my belly but also won’t be overly upset about if I miss out. Peach cobbler (or really any kind of dessert) is a borderline must-have, though.
Shrimp skewers sound amazing but I’d prioritize filling my plate with the foods listed above. Similarly, there’s nothing wrong with chicken, but I’d make sure to get my fill of less-common foods like ribs or pork chops first. Cornbread can be pretty hit-or-miss in my experience depending on its temperature and density.
D: Pasta salad, coleslaw, chips
Pasta salad and coleslaw are sides that I don’t get excited about but will still eat. Chips are solid, but for a big event like the Fourth, they don’t do it for me as much as a specialty side like corn on the cob or mac and cheese.
Spinach is my least favorite food item on the planet (challenged only by anchovies). I’m a big fan of potatoes, albeit not in “salad” form in which mayonnaise is a key ingredient. And I don’t even know what that last image is portraying.
