LAMM AT LARGE: The World Cup is Here

todayNovember 17, 2022

Background
I’m going to become more invested in the World Cup this year. That won’t be difficult to do because I’ve barely watched any of the World’s Biggest Sports Tournament in my life.
I’ve never knocked soccer like most snobby American sports — i.e. football — fans, who whine about the sports being too slow, not enough scoring and little physical contact.
My problem with soccer is I don’t understand the game. Extra time, penalty kicks, substitution . . . you can go on and on about my soccer ignorance. I never played the game. Neither did either of my sons. I do know the names of superstars such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and, uh, I’ve heard of Pele.
This year’s World Cup starts Sunday with 32 teams, representing most of the world, playing 48 games in 13 days. They are divided into eight 4-team groups. The USA isn’t expected to be much of a factor in Group B alongside England, Wales and Iran.
You can see I’ve been reading up on the World Cup. Now I just have to make myself watch some games.
