Flat racing: The top performing horses so far this season
(Stock ID: 1120547348)
The 2026 Flat season has already produced a string of high-class performers, from an unbeaten Classic colt to a record-breaking Derby winner. With the major summer meetings in full swing, the best horses in training are showing their hand.
From Newmarket to Royal Ascot, the spring and early summer have served up Group 1 winners in every division. Anyone wagering on the latest meetings will have followed many of these names closely as their seasons have unfolded.
Plenty of people who place horse racing bets keep track of the leading horses as the campaign builds. In this article, we look at the standout performers of the Flat season so far.
Bow Echo
Bow Echo has been the colt of the season. The George Boughey-trained three-year-old won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, then proved it was no fluke when holding off Gstaad once again in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. He remains unbeaten in five starts, and with the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood next on his agenda, he has the look of a top-class miler.
Christmas Day
Christmas Day came out on top in the season’s biggest race. Sent off as one of several Aidan O’Brien runners in the Derby, the son of Camelot stayed on strongly through testing ground at Epsom to win. It gave the Ballydoyle trainer a record-extending 12th Derby and the 50th British Classic of his career, with Ronan Whelan riding his first Classic winner.
Thundering On
Thundering On was the standout filly of the spring. Trained by Joseph O’Brien, the daughter of Frankel produced a last-to-first run to win the Oaks under Dylan Browne McMonagle, going clear in the straight and being eased down before the line. It was a first British Classic for Browne McMonagle, and she looks one of the best fillies of her generation.
Ombudsman
Ombudsman is the leading older horse in training. The John and Thady Gosden-trained star landed back-to-back runnings of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot under William Buick, pulling clear of his rivals, including Arc 1-2 Daryz and Minnie Hawk, to confirm his standing among the best middle-distance horses around. The Group 1 International Stakes at York looks the likely next target, where he will again be hard to beat.
Ten Bob Tony
Ten Bob Tony provided the feel-good story of Royal Ascot. The Ed Walker-trained five-year-old sprang the biggest surprise of the meeting when winning the Queen Anne Stakes under Kieran Shoemark, becoming the longest-priced winner of the race since 1950. It was a first top-level success for the gelding and a landmark Group 1 for a smaller yard taking on the established powers.
Great Barrier Reef
Great Barrier Reef is the juvenile to follow. The unbeaten Aidan O’Brien colt landed the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot under Wayne Lordan, adding to two earlier wins at the Curragh. His trainer believes he will stay further as he matures, and he looks an exciting prospect for the major two-year-old races still to come.
With Goodwood, York and British Champions Day still ahead, there is plenty of top-level Flat action to come. For now, these are the horses that have set the standard in 2026.
Performance, Sleep and Alcohol: What Every Athlete Should Know Success in sport depends on far more than training alone. Nutrition, hydration, recovery and sleep all play vital roles in helping athletes perform at their best. While many people carefully plan their workouts and diets, alcohol is often overlooked as a factor that can influence performance. Although enjoying an occasional drink is unlikely to undo months of hard work, alcohol can affect sleep quality, recovery and physical performance in ways that […]
The "Loyalty Tax": Why You Should Never Stick to Just One Sportsbook Staying loyal to a single betting app might seem like the easiest option, but over the course of a season, it can quietly reduce the value you get from every bet. Expanding your options across the legal […]
