Defenders of Jacksonville Jaguars: Can They Bring the Magic Back?

The Jacksonville Jaguars unfortunately didn’t perform well during the 2024 NFL season, but they plan to change that in the upcoming one. This change will be spearheaded by quarterback Trevor Lawrence and head coach Liam Coen. Coen has a successful track record as an offensive coordinator and could create a miracle for the Jaguars. However, one person alone can’t perform miracles; defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile will also need to assist.

After the Jaguars’ training camp concluded on August 12th, Campanile answered numerous questions and offered insightful analysis of their defenders. Here, we’ll take a closer look at them and try to get a better idea of what to expect from the Jaguars in the new NFL season. You can also test your own performance against other players, such as by joining a European roulette tournament. But before you do, be sure to visit the Roulette77 platform and check out the available strategies.

What Happened So Far?

The Jaguars spent nearly $800 million building their roster during the 2024 offseason, but they haven’t been able to justify that investment throughout the season. A look at the team’s offensive and defensive stats reveals this:

OFFENSIVE STATISTICS
DATA (TOTAL)RESULTPOSITION
Offensive yards306,225th
Rushing yards204,524th
Passing yards101,726th
Points18.8 (per game)26th

DEFENSIVE STATISTICS
DATA (TOTAL)RESULTPOSITION
Yards allowed389,931st
Passing yards allowed257,332nd
Rushing yards allowed132,524yh
Points allowed25,628th

To summarize briefly, the Jaguars rank at the bottom of every category in offensive statistics and are very close to the bottom in defensive statistics.

Who is Liam Coen?

Liam Coen, a former Vipers player, has worked as a coach and coordinator with over a dozen teams. He was the offensive coordinator for Kentucky in 2023 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024. His notable accomplishments include:

  • He led the Wildcats to a victory over Iowa in the 2022 Citrus Bowl
  • He led Kentucky to a 29.1 points-per-game average
  • He led the Buccaneers to third place in yardage and fourth place in offensive points

Coen became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025, and the common hope is that he can replicate his previous success there.

Defenders of Jacksonville Jaguars

As mentioned above, the Jaguars need to improve their defensive performance: Coen won’t have much trouble with offensive stats due to his experience, but when it comes to defense, he has to rely on Anthony Campanile. Campanile offered some insightful analysis of the team’s defenders after training camp, including:

Christian Braswell (Cornerback)

Campanile said he was generally pleased with Braswell’s performance and that he performed at the level he expected from him. Braswell was a 2023 draft pick and is an All-Big Ten selection by Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Dennis Gardeck (Linebacker)

Campanile considers Gardeck one of the best pass rushers he’s ever seen and says he’s confident in his physical performance. Gardeck was a Cliff Harris Award finalist and an All-NSIC First Team member.

Austin Johnson (Tackle)

Campanile believes Johnson is the veteran presence the team needs, calling him a true “total pro.” Johnson previously played for the Giants, Chargers, and Bills. We can say that he is the most experienced player of the defender team.

Ventrel Miller (Linebacker)

According to Campanile, Miller is a very physical player and will have to contend with the challenges that come with that, but overall, he’s done a good job so far. Coming from the University of Florida, Miller boasts impressive statistics but is one of the team’s most inexperienced members.

Darnell Savage (Safety)

Campanile believes that someone who wants to play safety needs to be a “smart guy”, and he believes Savage fits that description. When the Jaguars play the Saints, Savage will have an important role. Darnell Savage was a 2019 draft pick and a PFWA All-Rookie Team member.

Jarrian Jones (cornerback)

While Campanile generally said Jones did a good job, his tone and lack of detail make it seem like he wasn’t happy with him. Jones was a 2024 draft pick and famous for his interception in the Florida-Miami game.

Aside from Austin Johnson, the defense is virtually devoid of any experienced players, so Anthony Campanile will have a tough job. A large portion of the players will begin their professional NFL careers with the Jaguars, and even if they have the potential, it may take time to unlock it. The team, however, don’t have the luxury of time; they need immediate results. Therefore, it seems that creating a miracle with the current defensive team will require another miracle.

A similar challenge awaits Coen. Improving offensive performance seems to be easier than defensive performance, but it is impossible to achieve success if these two do not work together. In short, the 2025 season also looks set to be quite challenging for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
