From Sports to Screens: The Growth of Digital Competition

The competitive spirit has followed humanity since our inception. Our ancestors competed just as hard in athletic competitions as in intellectual endeavors. We are all well aware of the Ancient Greeks and their love of debate. But what the people of that time and region also loved was sports. They gave us the blueprint for the modern Olympic games after all.

That competitive nature remains a big part of our culture in the modern era. It may have even gotten stronger than ever. Sports now have a global following; some of the most significant events even get billions of viewers whenever they occur. But the digital age has allowed for a brand new competition style to come into the forefront.

The Rise of Digital Competition

The digital age has warped our perception of everyday life. Most aspects of the day have now been absorbed into new and exciting digital technology. We’ve seen an increase in remote work, which is only possible thanks to computers and smartphones. We have also experienced a new era in entertainment. Online gaming and streaming services have made it possible to enjoy video games, films and television from home or on the go.

Even traditionally land-based events have not been unaffected by the digital age. Many view gambling as an entirely landlocked hobby. But we can clearly see that iGaming is the hottest trend in the industry. Online casinos are now generating billions of dollars every year. Gamblers can see updates on today’s most competitive online poker tournaments and even join them if they are up to the task.

It is not just entertainment that has become much more competitive. The business world is also a lot more challenging to navigate. Young visionaries certainly have a lot more opportunity to rise to the top. But they also have to worry about rivals working just as hard to make it in the dog eat dog world. That is why we see a growing number of online startup competitions, such as digital tournaments where entrepreneurs can submit their fresh ideas to a panel of judges who pick the best one. Even the business world can be viewed through the lens of competition today.

How Podcasts Stir Competition

The death of radio has been greatly exaggerated over the years. Television may offer the benefit of moving pictures, but there is something about relaxing on a long drive and listening to familiar voices tackle unfamiliar topics. The radio has made a comeback in the form of podcasts. It wouldn’t be unfair to classify podcasts as the online evolution of radio. They do come with the significant advantage that anyone can start a podcast.

Unsurprisingly, many established entertainment brands have taken this opportunity to stir the flames of competition. The NPR student podcast challenge is one such event. The event invites students all over America to share their own stories with the world. The competition began in 2018, and the company never expected that it would be such a smash hit. Six years later, the NPR challenge is still going strong.

Podcasting will likely continue to thrive in the future. The goal of every podcaster is to accumulate a massive audience. Many do that by tackling familiar topics like sports or everyday life. But some go the extra mile to examine niche subjects. History and philosophy podcasts are a massive hit. The reason is that very few people run such podcasts and have expertise on the subjects that they discuss. So competition exists even in the subcategories of the podcasting world.

Streaming Can Be Quite Competitive

The era of streaming is upon us. Television and film are now mostly watched on streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Very few people bother surfing old-school TV channels hoping to discover something new. But streaming is so much more than just these mainstream companies. There is a bustling independent scene in the streaming world, largely thanks to platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

Twitch began as a website that would allow professional gamers to stream their progress to fans the world over. But it soon attracted a ton of different people who were looking to diversify the platform. The current state of Twitch has diverse sub-communities, each tackling their own areas of expertise. There are discussions on politics, philosophy, comedy, and entertainment. The platform’s success has led to many people hoping to try their own hand at streaming.

The growing number of Twitch streamers naturally creates more competition. We live in a period of online entertainment where anyone can rise to the top through hard work and a lot of luck. There are certain demands that Twitch streamers must meet in order to become successful though. One is that they must be good at the games that they play. While it may seem simple; becoming skilled in a game is not the walk in the park that many assume it to be.
