Welcome to the Week 9 edition of the Midnight Mailbag! I’ll be asking for your lingering questions after each Jaguars game on 1010XL’s Facebook and X/Twitter pages, with the submission deadline set for 11:59 p.m. the same day.
Here were your questions following Jacksonville’s 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
From LaxN8 — Yeah, why can’t the coaches make sure we have the best 11 on the field at all times? Only time your star players should be off the field is if they need a breather or injured.
I assume you’re referencing Jacksonville’s final offensive play of the game, when Trevor Lawrence threw an interception while targeting backup running back D’Ernest Johnson downfield. Johnson was likely in the game because Jaguars coaches have the most trust in him to pass protect, which is understandable.
I don’t have a major issue with Etienne being off the field in that situation — but I do not agree with Austin Trammell’s usage. He was plug-and-chugged into Christian Kirk’s slot role (Parker Washington took over for Gabe Davis) and the Jaguars continued running its typical three-receiver concepts rather than adjusting to feature players like Brian Thomas Jr. or Brenton Strange. There’s absolutely no excuse for Thomas Jr. to finish a game, especially one in which the Jaguars never held a lead, with 2 touches.
From Fire Shad Khan — Are Doug and Trent getting fired?
The only way Doug Pederson doesn’t get fired is if the Jaguars win out and make the playoffs. Doug is 99% gone — it’s a matter of when, not if.
Truthfully, I don’t have a read on the general manager situation. Trent Baalke objectively deserves to be shown the door based on his transaction history, albeit team owner Shad Khan has an infamous degree of patience. I’ll say 70/30 chance that Baalke follows Pederson out of town.
From iowa_jaguar — Why don’t we try more no-huddle offensive sequences?
No-huddle offenses seem impressive because they’re usually utilized when defenses are trying to prevent big plays in two-minute situations. It wouldn’t be as beneficial to run no-huddle throughout an entire game because there’d be far fewer options on the playcalling menu.
That said, I do think it’d be beneficial to mix in more no-huddle reps in spurts. Clearly the Jaguars need to find any edge possible to improve its middling offense.
From Kdifferis — What reason do we have to care about the rest of this season. To see young guys play and improve? Heard that during the Gus Bradley years.
I’ll give you three reasons. One is, yes, watching the young guys. Your point is fair but Gus Bradley’s teams didn’t have Lawrence and Thomas Jr., who are already two of the most talented players in franchise history. That’s not a hyperbole.
Two, community. Among the best parts of not just fandom, but life, is sharing experiences with others.
Three, because you love football! The majority of Sunday’s loss was not a fun experience, but did you see that Saquon Barkley juke?! Sports are a vehicle for incredible feats that are entertaining as hell to witness. When the Jaguars suck, worry less about the scoreboard, and focus more on the details of each individual moment.
