Welcome to the Week 10 edition of the Midnight Mailbag! I’ll be asking for your lingering questions after each Jaguars game on 1010XL’s Facebook and X/Twitter pages, with the submission deadline set for 11:59 p.m. the same day.
Here were your questions following Jacksonville’s 12-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
From Jagneto — When is Shad and Tony Khan going to be embarrassed enough to clean house? 80% purple today with echos of SKOL SKOL throughout the stadium. We witnessed the worst offensive performance in team history, and another smug disrespectful press conference. Wasting TLaw’s years. Tick Tick
From Eugene J. Bell — How can Khan NOT see that his football org needs a complete overhaul top to bottom? New GM,HC and direction
From Zach Phillips — When will Khan grow up and fire the GM?
This upcoming Sunday seems set up to be Doug Pederson’s last game as Jacksonville’s head coach. The 2-8 Jaguars are traveling to Detroit to face the 8-1 Lions, who are 12.5-point favorites and could very well embarrass team ownership enough to prompt action.
There are two chief counterpoints. First, Shad Khan does not like making midseason firings. Unless the coach is kicking the kicker, he’s patient enough to let lost seasons play out and reset management at the appropriate time. Secondly, whenever Pederson is let go, offensive coordinator Press Taylor figures to follow him out the door. It’d be tough for the 2024 Jaguars to lose its two of its highest-ranking coaches in the middle of the season from an organizational/operations standpoint.
Maybe Pederson and Taylor will no longer be members of the team by this time next week, but it’s more likely that they’ll be relieved on the Monday after the final regular season game. As for general manager Trent Baalke- it would be shocking to see him fired before that date. I can’t think of a single NFL general manager who was fired midseason (again, tough to do from an organizational/operations standpoint).
Expect Khan to clean house in January.
