The second week of the high school football season is in the books, and all but one of the Super 10 teams notched wins on Friday night.
Only 10th-ranked University Christian failed to win, losing a 21-20 thriller at Bishop Kenny. The Christians (1-1) were poised to knot things up after a Donovan Moss rushing touchdown with 15 seconds left to play. But Kenny blocked the PAT to preserve the win in its season opener.
No. 1 Bolles used three passing touchdowns from Jaden Weatherly and interceptions from TJ Williamson and Santana Starks to pull away from Trinity Christian for a 35-12 win. The Bulldogs (2-0) will host No. 3 St. Augustine (2-0) in next week’s Varsity 4 Game of the Week.
Raines’ reigning All-News4JAX Varsity 4 offensive player of the year Timothy Cole threw five touchdown passes in the first quarter (Devin Frazier, Ziyon Butler, Kelvin Brown Jr. and two to Ethan Sherman) in a 77-0 blowout of Sandalwood. Butler added a second scoring catch in the second half on a pass from Sa’mon Ellison-Morgan.
Johdeem Jones had a pick, Jy’Tye Flornoy and Troy Butler had defensive touchdowns and Shareef Jackson returned a punt for a score in the romp. Tadarius Washington had a 79-yard rushing touchdown and Tisean Haynes added a 10-yard scoring run.Sandalwood’s losing streak is now at an area-high 22 games.
No. 5 Mandarin used another end-to-end pick-six from sophomore phenom Brysen Wright to win its fourth straight in the battle for the Principal’s Cup with a 54-16 romp over Atlantic Coast. Wright also returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a touchdown for the Mustangs (2-0). Wright had a 99-yard interception return for a score in Week 1 against Creekside.
