First quarter
Jacksonville received the ball first and began with good field position after Carolina trotted out a linebacker for the opening kickoff (Eddy Pineiro tweaked his hamstring in warm-ups). The Jaguars slowly marched down the field, with a 12-yard catch by Calvin Ridley being the largest gain, and Brandon McManus ultimately kicked a 35-yard field goal.
Jaguars 3, Panthers 0
Carolina had a nice first possession as well. They got one yard away from the red zone in 13 plays, but on 4th-and-7, the Panthers went for it (remember, hurt kicker) and Bryce Young got crumpled on a sack.
Second quarter
The Jaguars punted after five plays, with C.J. Beathard raising his hands in confusion (in the direction of Ridley) as he walked off the field. Young returned for Carolina on its next possession, but the Panthers went three-and-out thanks to a Travon Walker third down sack.
Jacksonville got back on the board with a 26-yard field goal spurned by first downs from Ridley, Travis Etienne, and Evan Engram. Engram has reached 100 receptions on the season, making him just the 8th tight end in NFL history to do so (and the second Jaguar, after Jimmy Smith).
Jaguars 6, Panthers 0
Carolina went three-and-out again thanks to another third down sack. This time, Josh Allen got the job done, which put him at 14.5 sacks on the year — tied with Calais Campbell for the most sacks in a single season in franchise history. Beathard found Jamal Agnew deep downfield for 48 yards to set up a 24-yard field goal.
Jaguars 9, Panthers 0
Another three-and-out for the Panthers, another third down sack for Josh Allen. He has officially passed Campbell to break the Jaguars’ all-time single-season sack record.
Third quarter
Carolina punted after an uneventful drive to open the second half, and two plays into Jacksonville’s possession, Etienne flew down the sidelines for a 62-yard touchdown!
Jaguars 16, Panthers 0
You won’t believe this — on Carolina’s next possession, they had gains of 3, 5, and 0. Jacksonville returned the punt to its own 17-yard line before orchestrating a 12-play, 67-yard drive that took seven minutes off the clock and ended with yet another McManus field goal.
Jaguars 19, Panthers 0
Fourth quarter
Carolina finally got things going a bit on offense and drove 50 yards in 14 plays, but Jacksonville held up on a fourth down just outside the red zone. Mike Caldwell’s defense has forced as many punts as they’ve allowed first downs (6).
The Jaguars iced the game with a 1-yard touchdown by Etienne and an interception by Antonio Johnson. Happy New Year, Jags fans!
