Welcome to the latest edition of “Gus’ Tiers” at 1010XL/92.5 FM!
Each Wednesday, I’ll be using Tiermaker dot com to create a 100% correct ranking of a timely subject related to the Jacksonville Jaguars/NFL landscape.
For this week’s Tier, I ranked every NFL team entering the 2024-25 season.
Three-peat?: Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs are trying to become the first team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowls (the Packers had two three-peats before the NFL championship name was renamed in 1967). Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones are all running it back.
Contenders: Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers
These teams have the most talented rosters in the league, and some of the best coaches. The Texans and Packers won’t be sleepers for long.
The Ravens and Dolphins have offensive line and defensive playcalling questions; the Bills and the Bengals aren’t as talented as years past; and I don’t trust the Lions’ Jared Goff in an outdoor playoff game.
Wildcards: Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks
These teams could make some noise as a Wild Card Round team, but I wouldn’t expect them to make a deep playoff push. Each team could climb with encouraging quarterback play to start the season.
A year away: Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings
These are ascending organizations with hotshot quarterbacks and/or head coaches, but their rosters aren’t yet good enough to truly contend.
Weird vibes: Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans
The Falcons somehow overcommitted to the quarterback position; the Browns have a sexual offender as their quarterback; the Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh is a great coach albeit the definition of weird; and the Titans pushed out Mike Vrabel to make a nepotism hire.
Mid as hell: Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
These teams are in mediocre purgatory. They have good enough rosters and/or coaching to stay in the playoff hunt for most of the season, but will likely end up missing out on both the postseason and a top-five draft pick.
No. 1 pick?: Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, New York Giants, Washington Commanders
