Gus’ Tiers: 2024 NFL wide receiver trios

Background

Welcome to the latest edition of “Gus’ Tiers” at 1010XL/92.5 FM!

Each Wednesday, I’ll be using Tiermaker dot com to create a 100% correct ranking of a timely subject related to the Jacksonville Jaguars/NFL landscape.

For this week’s Tier, I ranked I ranked the NFL’s best wide receivers trios.

Note: Jacksonville would be lower ranked if this was based on the full WR depth chart for each team — but since there’s a notable drop off for the Jaguars after their three starters, I figured adjust the criteria.

I previously tiered every team’s pass-catching unit after the first wave of free agency.

Elite: Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals

Houston has arguably *the* best receiver trio in the league after adding a four-time Pro Bowler in Stefon Diggs to an electric young duo in Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Chicago also has an excellent group after acquiring a veteran of its own in Keenan Allen, along with ninth-overall pick Rome Odunze, to play with D.J. Moore.

The Niners, Fins, Birds, and ‘Gals are here thanks to rostering two top-20 receivers.

Good: Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders

The Seahawks were knocked down a peg because despite having a well-rounded room, I wouldn’t say any of their receivers are top-20 players at their position. Meanwhile, Justin Jefferson is the best receiver in the league, but the Vikings’ unit isn’t balanced enough to land in the top category.

The Titans and the Rams have a blend of dominant veterans and promising youngsters. The Cowboys, Jets, and Raiders all have middling overall groups but a talented enough no. 1 option (CeeDee Lamb, Garrett Wilson, and Davante Adams, respectively) to land them here.

Mid: Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions

These teams all have a solid group of receivers, but there’s either not enough high-end talent (Chiefs, Packers) or not enough depth (Bucs, Browns) or a bit of both (Jaguars, Lions).

Jacksonville has a promising trio between Christian Kirk, free agent signing Gabe Davis, and 23rd overall pick Brian Thomas Jr. – but unless BTJ explodes on the scene as a rookie, none of those players are truly top-tier. Davis’ inconsistencies also worry me.

Weak: Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens

These teams have one or two exciting options at wide receiver, but they are unlikely to move up in these tiers until another one or two exciting options are added. There’s some juice but not quite enough with these teams.

Horrid: Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots

Let’s call a re-do of the 2024 offseason so that these teams, and their respective quarterbacks, can get some more help at receiver. #freejustinherbert

Draft wrap: Projecting Jaguars 53-man roster

By Hays Carlyon The NFL Draft is behind us. The Jaguars had a strong three days – I’d give general manager Trent Baalke and coach Doug Pederson an A- as a grade – adding nine players, plus picking up a third-rounder and fourth-rounder from Minnesota in the 2025 draft for trading back six spots in the first round. So, how does the roster look now? Let’s project the 53-man roster […]
