LAMM AT LARGE: The Baseball HOF Problem

todayJuly 26, 2022

Big Papi was given a loud and long ovation at his Hall of Fame induction. Rightly so.
A first ballot inductee with 78 percent of the votes, Big Papi/David Ortiz was one of baseball’s greatest clutch hitters, particularly in the postseason where he led the Red Sox to three world championships.
I’d have voted for Ortiz. I’d also have voted for Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, both of whom continued to be denied admission to the Hall because of their link to steroids.
What’s the connection? Ortiz, too, was linked the steroids. The Twins cut him after 6 seasons. He shows up in Boston and immediately starts hitting home runs.
But Big Papi was one of baseball’s most popular players with other players and the media. Bonds and Clemens were not.
So is the Hall a popularity contest?
I’m happy for Ortiz. I’d be happier if Bonds and Clemens  had been standing beside him at the HoF podium.
