Florida Gators’ Emotional Reaction to Injury Ahead of March Madness

Micah Handlogten, the center for Florida, suffered a fracture in his lower left leg during the early stages of the Southeastern Conference Tournament final on Sunday. He was then transported to a hospital on a stretcher.

Coach Todd Golden, who crouched by his player as Handlogten remained on the ground, expressed empathy for the rookie center after the Gators’ 86-67 defeat to Auburn.

It is truly disheartening to witness this unfortunate outcome for him, as he consistently demonstrates exemplary behavior and puts in diligent effort,” said Golden while struggling to manage his emotions after the game. “That’s an extremely rare and unexpected injury not commonly observed in this sport. Participating in a high-stakes game of this magnitude and experiencing such a disappointing outcome, I empathize with him,” he added.

Golden expressed gratitude to the medical personnel and the SEC for promptly attending to Handlogten’s treatment. Florida authorities anticipated that Handlogten would have surgery on Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Sending Prayers to Handlogten

Handlogten, who stands at 7 feet 1 inch, managed to get two rebounds within two minutes. However, he uncomfortably fell on his left foot when attempting to grab a third rebound. Instantly, he collapsed in agony and turned onto his side, clutching his hands to his face.

An audible fracture of the bone was perceptible via the television, accompanied by the instant appearance of blood on the posterior side of his calf.

Play continued as Aden Holloway received a pass and successfully executed a layup for Auburn on the other side. Trainers quickly attended to Handlogten, bringing the game to a halt and creating a quiet atmosphere in Bridgestone Arena.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said the players from both teams reconvened at their respective benches and engaged in prayer.

They stood together as Handlogten’s leg was immobilized in an air cast, and then he was carefully transferred onto a backboard and then carried onto a stretcher. Teammates, some crying, approached him as Handlogten was escorted from the court.

While playing at Marshall, Handlogten achieved a national ranking of 11th in shot blocks per game with an average of 2.3. Additionally, he was recognized as the Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year. He relocated to Florida and began 22 out of 33 games, including the tournament final on Sunday.

Handlogten entered the contest with a national ranking of fourth in offensive rebounding %. Forward Tyrese Samuel expressed his intention to have a positive mindset in the next weeks.

March Madness 2024: The Show Must Go On

Despite the devastating injury to Florida’s big man, the show must go on, and the Gators are now looking toward their first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2020-21 campaign.

The Gators’ outright odds to win the NCAA Championship are +5400 and an implied probability of 1.8%, with the opportunity to boost those prices ever further with the best promotional codes at top sportsbooks potentially increasing their winnings should the Gators triumph against the odds

Of course, many are doubting their chances. However, Florida has shown the strength and determination to rival some of the country’s most prestigious schools this season. They have won over other teams participating in the tournament, such as Alabama (twice), Auburn, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Mississippi State. This suggests that they can make a significant impact in the Big Dance and prove their doubters wrong.

Florida has a potent offensive strategy that tends to accumulate points rapidly. The Gators have the sixth-highest-scoring offense in the country, with an average of 85.1 points per game. They have exceptional scoring guards and skilled big men, which creates a challenging situation for even the most highly rated defenses, thus making their current sportsbook price an intriguing wagering position, at the very least.

The absence of Handlogten’s rebounding skills will be greatly felt, but UF’s offensive strength will increase as Samuel and Alex Condon take charge of the court more often. Both forwards have shown their capability to score with pick-and-roll plays and individual paint touches.

The time speculation is, however, nearly over. March Madness is underway, and Florida’s tenure begins this weekend.

Go Gators!
