How good is high school baseball in Jacksonville?

Background

I was watching a Giants baseball on TV recently when I was reminded just how good high school baseball in Jacksonville is. The Giants’ lineup had not one but two players from our city.

 

Former Bolles star Austin Slater, now a 30-year-old veteran, was in the outfield, and rookie Brett wisely of Sandlewood

 

Our city has produced dozens of MLB players. I can go back to Don Bessett, a Dodgers closer in the 50s. Others that immediately pop into my mind are Vince Coleman, Daniel Murphy, Rick Wilkins, Brett Myers, Billy Butler, Jon Papelbon, Darren O’Day and Storm and Glen Davis (no relations).

 

Then there are brothers Ben and Mat Gamel. I apologize as others I’ve left out.

 

Ah, where are Hall of Famer Chipper Jones and Javier Baez? They moved to Jacksonville to play their high school baseball.
