If Victor Wembanyama (we’ve got to get him a nickname) isn’t picked No. 1 in tonight’s draft I’ll swim across the St. Johns River at its widest point.
He is considered the best prospect since LeBron James. Some rate him as the best prospect ever.
Let me tell you about this French teenager in case you haven’t been following the NBA. He’s a physical freak. In this age when 7-footers are almost routine — there were 32 on rosters when the season ended — he is expected to dominate early in his rookie season.
Oh, I know there are all-stars among those 32. The reigning MVP is one of them, Joel Embiid. The best player right now is Nikola Jokic. Both are barely 7 feet tall. Kevin Durant is barely under 7 feet.
Wembanyama is between 7-3 and 7-5 but plays like a guard. He’s fast, quick, can handle the ball, and shoots 3-pointers. And he plays defense, excelling as a shot blocker. He’s capable of turning the San Antonio Spurs into an instant playoff team.
He’s so good there’s been almost no talk about anyone else.
