If you looking for job security, being an NBA head coach isn’t for you. Talk about the perfect example of what have you done for me lately.
Four coaches have been fired this season, three have won championships, and all who’ve won Coach-of-the-Year honors in recent history.
Monty Williams took over a long-struggling Suns franchise and immediately turned Phoenix into a power. 64-18 any good? But he couldn’t win a ring. After losing to Denver in the Western semis, Williams was sent packing. Eight years of winning and knocking on the door to the title, the 76ers dropped the axe on Doc Rivers. Two years after winning a title, Milwaukee had enough of Mike Budenholzer after 5 seasons. Nick Nurse lasted 5 seasons and one title in Toronto.
There are exceptions. Gregg Popovich has been in San Antonio for 27 years. Erick Spoelstra, a former video director, was handed the Heat’s top job 13 years ago. Steve Kerr has led the Warriors for 9 seasons.
Can Denver’s Mike Malone make it 7 seasons if the Nuggets don’t win this year’s ring? Can Darvin Ham make 2 years with the Lakers?
Maybe, maybe not.
