It was about 25 years ago. I don’t remember any details except for one. It was a preseason game for the Jaguars and afterward, I asked Coach Tom Coughlin, “What was the best thing about tonight?”

“No one was injured,” he replied.

I couldn’t help myself but a follow-up question seemed so obvious.

“If that’s the best thing, Tom, why you’d play the game tonight?”

He stared at me and stormed off, obviously irritated at what he considered a stupid question.

I tell this story because I still consider preseason “scrimmages” nothing more than more practice; another opportunity to give players on the back half of the roster more work.

That exchange with Coughlin all those years ago shaped my opinion about the preseason.
