Get ready Canton: The Jaguars are coming.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Monday that the Jaguars will play the Las Vegas Raiders in the Hall of Fame game at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4 in Canton, Ohio. The exhibition starts the NFL’s preseason slate. Tickets go on sale Friday.
The Jaguars were chosen as part of the celebration for Tony Boselli’s enshrinement ceremony into the Hall on Aug. 6. The 49-year-old Boselli was elected to the Hall of Fame earlier this month after a brilliant career at left tackle for the Jaguars from 1995-2001.
The Jaguars will be making their first appearance in the Hall of Fame game since their debut in 1995.
The opportunity to play in the game means the Jaguars will begin training camp a week earlier than normal, likely starting on July 21. That’s good news for first-year coach Doug Pederson and second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence as the team tries to make a major improvement off of last year’s failed 3-14 campaign under former coach Urban Meyer.
The Raiders are represented in this year’s Hall class by former receiver Cliff Branch. This will be their fourth appearance in the contest and first since 2006.
Dallas and Pittsburgh played in the Hall of Fame game last season. The Cowboys and Steelers have made the most appearances in the game with seven each.
