What more can be said about Stetson Bennett’s remarkable career as Georgia’s quarterback? It’s difficult to imagine a college football fan not knowing Bennett’s journey and success.
But his career is so incredible it bears repeating now that’s its over — punctuated by a second consecutive national championship.
Bennett was rated a 2-star quarterback coming out of high school in Georgia. His best college offer came from Middle Tennessee State, but he was a lifetime Georgia Bulldogs fan and so he walked on in Athens in 2017.
He didn’t take a snap that first year and was encouraged to give junior college a try. A year later, in 2019, he returned to Georgia and became Jake Fromm’s backup, seeing little action.
In 2020, Georgia signed highly touted transfer J.T. Daniels and again Bennett was assigned to the bench. He later started a couple games but was sent back to bench.
In 2021, again he was a backup, but an early season injury suffered by Daniels got Bennett back on the field much to the angst of some Bulldogs’ fans. Fortunately for Georgia, Coach Kirby Smart ignored them and Bennett led the Bulldogs to their first national championship in 40 years. Because of Covid-19 Bennett got a 6th year in 2022 . . . and the rest is history: Heisman finalist, another national championship and arguably the greatest Bulldog ever (my apologies to Herschel Walker).
He won’t be drafted high in the NFL because he’s seen as too small and lacks arm strength. Will NFL scouts make the same mistake as high school recruiters?
