LAMM AT LARGE: It’s Prime Time In Colorado

todayDecember 9, 2022

Background
Colorado hit a home run with the hiring of Deion “Prime Time” Sanders as its new football.
Coach Prime, as he likes to be called, faces a daunting task trying to make the Buffaloes relevant after nearly three decades. Colorado has had one winning season in 18 years, and a total of four in this century. It is the laughingstock of the Pac-12. This isn’t a job for a retreaded coach or a young X and Os genius. The Buffaloes needed players, not worn out pep talks and schemes.
I’m convinced Coach Prime can get them. The former FSU All-American corner and longtime NFL star cut his head coaching teeth during three years at Jackson State, going 27-5 and winning the last two SWAC championships at the small HBC school. He quickly built his roster through the transfer portal and learning how to use the NIL.
The key to his recruiting success is, although he’s 55 and none of today’s players ever saw him play, his personality. He played with a flair and has maintained that flair. Think of Prime Time, then and now, and you see the flashy clothes, jewelry and jive talk..
Being black helps him in a sports where the majority of player are black, but it’s more than that. Coach Prime is cool. Know any other coaches you describe that way?
