LAMM AT LARGE: LeRoy Butler should be in the Hall of Fame

todayFebruary 9, 2022

Background

Tony Boselli belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was the best left tackle in the NFL from 1995-1999. Sadly, a bum shoulder shortened his career. The only knock against him.

But if I had only one Hall of Fame vote, Boselli wouldn’t get it. My vote would go to LeRoy Butler, the long-time Packers safety who started at Lee High School before an All-American career at Florida State. For 12 years Butler terrorized NFL offenses as a bone-jarring tackler and ball-hawking pass defender. He also had his moments on special teams. Butler is the only first team member of the 1990’s All-Decade team who is not enshrined in Canton, OH.

He also pioneered the “Lambeau Leap” in 1993.

Butler’s biggest drawback was that he was quiet and didn’t call attention to himself. His absence from the Hall is the No. 1 injustice in the voting.
