LAMM AT LARGE: March Is Here

todayMarch 2, 2023

Background
The 1988 Kansas Jayhawks lost 11 games. They also won the national championship.
No NCAA basketball champ has ever lost more games, although double-digit losers winning the national title was a bit of a trend in the 80s.
N.C. State (’82) and Villanova (85) each lost 10 times.
Now, after a quarter of a century, it could well happen again, but it wouldn’t be a shocker like it was back then.
That’s how confusing this season has been. Houston is ranked No. 1 on the brink of March Madness, but few will have the Cougars as the favorites. Because basketball schedules vary so much — there are 363 D-1 teams — it’s difficult to tell just how good, say, Florida
Atlantic (26-3) really is.
By the same token, the relative parity among Power 5 conferences makes it even more difficult to spot potential champs.
Therefore, we shouldn’t write off teams like Kentucky (20-9), Duke (21-9) or Indiana (20-9).
Good luck filling out your bracket.
