As I tell you this, FSU Coach Mike Norvell has not named a starting QB for Sunday’s season opener against visiting Notre Dame. But whenever McKenzie Milton takes a snap, as a starter or backup, it will be the continuation of an inspirational story for the ages.
In 2018 when Milton was carted off the field with a devastating knee injury, few expected the junior to ever play football again. UCF had to move on and so did Milton. He was determined to play again — somewhere. Norvell, new at FSU, said, “Sure, the ‘Noles will take a flier on you”.
Since that awful day in 2018, Milton has worked and worked, often when no one was looking. Surgeries, therapy and determination filled his days.
Whether or not he could ever regain the all-conference form he showed with the Knights remains an unknown. He and Jordan Travis, a redshirt sophomore who started most of last season, entered this week neck-in-neck for the starting job. On FSU’s midweek depth chart they were listed as co-starters.
Whatever happens, the 23-year-old Milton is already a winner.
