LAMM AT LARGE: OK to be disappointed with Dan Mullen

todayNovember 2, 2021

Background
It’s certainly too early to line up a firing squad for Dan Mullen. The Gators football coach does have a 33-13 record in 3.5 seasons.
But you can’t take records in college football at face value because of how out of balance schedules are. As a member of the SEC, playing a nonconference game against Samford is not the same as playing a nonconference game against Clemson.
In that light, Gator fans are right to be somewhat displeased with Mullen. But it’s deeper than that. Mullen has been badly out recruited by the by the two schools, Alabama and Georgia, he’s trying to catch. He’s remained competitive with them by signing transfers, but the ultimate sustained strength of any program is high school recruiting.
Unless Mullen can start  beating Nick Saban and Kirby Smart in the living room of 18-year-old prospects, Gator Nation isn’t going to be happy with its coach.
