LAMM AT LARGE: Table set for Billy Napier at UF

todayJanuary 19, 2022

Background

If Billy Napier doesn’t win at Florida it’s his own damn fault. The University has given him everything he’s asked for — and that’s a lot.

Since being hired as the Gators’ head football coach, he has made 30 hires for his staff. All told, I count the entire support staff at 38. That’s a bunch and then some. By comparison, I counted 24 on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff.

Help shouldn’t be an issue. Just the salaries of Napier and his on-field assistants is about $20 million. The Gators’ football facilities have also been upgraded to spectacular.

Napier has the enviable task of trying to catch two superpowers in his own conference, Georgia and Alabama — not to mention fast-improving Tennessee, LSU, Auburn and Texas A&M. If money can buy success, Gator fans are in store for some glorious days in the near future.

But I’m still wondering about the need for a director of speed improvement and skill development, or one for on-campus recruiting and player engagement.
