LAMM AT LARGE: Talking Heads Aren’t Scouts

So many people talk and write about something they know so little about for so long. Of course I’m talking about the NFL draft.

Radio talk show hosts, newspaper reporters/columnist, internet sites, bloggers, podcasters and social media go on and on for two months about who’s going where. They do mock drafts every 2-3 weeks.

How many of them have studied offensive tackles?

Yes, they are a handful of people — the draft experts — who make a living scouting college players and studying film of them year round. They can identify most of the best players. Other media sources simply feed off them.

It’s usually no problem identifying to top 3 or 4 picks. After that it’s a crapshoot.

The chicken-or-the-egg question is do millions watch the draft on TV because they’re brainwashed or because they love the NFL so much? I’m guessing a lot of both.
