LAMM AT LARGE: The Best SEC Coaches Ever

todayJuly 27, 2022

Background
Listening to our coverage of the SEC Media Days last week got me to thinking about the best SEC coaches I’ve covered since 1977.
The first two spots are a slam dunk for Nick Saben and Bear Bryant, both of Alabama.
It gets more difficult after that. I’m going with Florida’s Steve Spurrier for No. 3.
Not only did his Gators dominate the 1990s, he changed how SEC football was played with his Fun-and-Gun offense.
Georgia’s Vince Dooley is No. 4. In a 20-plus-year career was the Bulldogs, his teams were known for their nasty defense.
Tennessee’s Phil Fulmer rounds my top 5. Unfortunately for his Vols teams, they had to go head-to-head against Spurrier’s Gators. Fulmer did win the the national championship the year after all-world QB Peyton Manning left for the NFL.
So where’s Florida’s Urban Meyer and Georgia’s Kirby Smart? Meyer’s farewell from Florida was a nightmare. Smart needs more time.
