LAMM AT LARGE: Young or Old, a Star is a Star

Background

We marvel how our professional athletes are excelling so young.

Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are NFL MVPs in their second season. Luka Doncic and Ja Morant were NBA all-stars as rookies. Collin Morikawa already has won two major championships in his second year on the PGA Tour.  That’s just a sampling.

But there are plenty of old folks who aren’t going away.

Bucs QB Tom Brady is the poster grandpa, playing as well as ever at 43, but he isn’t the only one excelling with gray hair. Some examples are offensive tackles Jason Peters of Philadelphia and Andrew Whitworth of the LA Rams, both 39; St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright and Tampa Bay slugger Nelson Cruz, both 40; the Lakers’ LeBron James and the Suns’ Chris Paul, both 36; and golfer Phil Mickelson, the oldest major champ at 50.

What all of this tells me is age is, indeed, just a number.
