Super Bowl 58 was decided by inches

todayFebruary 13, 2024

Background

We flippantly refer to games as being decided by inches. Well, Super Bowl 58 is the latest, greatest case of just that.

I’m talking about the two inches of Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal’s right hand that blocked the extra point of Jake Moody’s PAT attempt. Instead of being up 4, the 49ers were up 3. A late KC field goal sent the game into overtime. KC won 25-22.

There was little attention given to Chenal. Just another blocked PAT. His name was hardly mentioned.

I’m betting you’d never heard his name, the 103rd pick in the 2022 draft out of Wisconsin-Madison.

That’s a shame. Certainly Patrick Mahomes deserved the MVP award. It was OK to gush over Travis Kelce. The Chiefs defense was very deserving of the praise it received, particularly Chris Jones.

But if it wasn’t for the tips of Chenal’s fingers, the praise would have centered around Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers’ defense.
