The growth of sports in the last 50 years has been amazing. Pro football tops the charts by far, but most others are experiencing spurts in popularity like never before.
One of those is golf. The men’s professional game has gone global and offers the kind of money that the traditional major sports pay their athletes.
A big part of golf’s growth has been in the women’s game. The LPGA is drawing better TV ratings, bigger crowds, and considerably bigger purses. More and more women of all ages are playing.
That’s why it got my attention that Wednesday and Thursday is the 60th playing of the San Jose Women’s Amateur tournament. That’s a long time. There are 101 scheduled to play, including defending champion Tama Caldabaugh.
It has been played every year since 1962 except for 2006 when the course was closed.
