The Monday after the Super Bowl ought to be a national holiday

todayFebruary 8, 2024

Background

More than 20 years ago I first wrote the Monday after the Super Bowl ought to be a national holiday. I’m happy to note that since then many others have said the same thing.

It’s a day when school attendance is down. More people call in sick from work. Production and sales are are slowed to a crawl. More large television sets are sold leading up to the The Big Game.

More hot dogs, burgers, wings, chili, chips, salsa and beer are consumed than on the 4th of July. More people have hangovers than on New Year’s Day. There are more parties than at Christmas.

Water pressure in cities plummet as people rush to the bathroom at halftime.

The Super Bowl sets records nearly every year for the size of the TV audience. The top 10 most watched shows of the all-time are Super Bowls.

The Super Bowl is uniquely American although the global audience grows every year.

For the few who don’t watch the game it’s a great time to go to that special restaurant where you haven’t been able top get a reservation or that movie that’s always too crowded.

Whatever, enjoy the day and rest on Monday.
