The New York Mets went on an off-season spending spree and now have a team payroll of $341 million, the highest in MLB. So what have they gotten for their money?
Not nearly enough. Through 60 games, they are 30-30 and in third place in the National East, 5 1/2 games behind the Braves and 2 behind the Marlins. There’s time for the Mets to turn around their disappointing season, but some so-called stars need to pick up their pace, but mainly they need their bodies to get well.
Their two richest off-season acquisitions were pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, who’ve missed nearly half of their starts. They’ve been solid, not great in those appearances with a combined record of 8-4 and a 3.70 ERA. They each earn $43 million this year. No. 3 starter Carlos Carrasco ($19 mill) has made only 6 starts and is a so-so 2-2 with a 5.75 ERA. Of course, closer Edwin Diaz is out for the season.
The Mets have 4 players making more than $20 million and they include Robinson Cano who’s no longer with them.
The scariest thing for Mets fans is can/will their arms hold up. Verlander is 40, Scherzer is 39. The Mets took a gamble on the two sure-fire Hall of Famers. Thus far, they’re losing their bets.
