USA Ryder Cup teams generally fall comfortably in place. Oh, the last spot on the 12-man team often creates some debate, but little else.
Not this year. With only the 30-man field Tour Championship remaining on the schedule, six players have qualified: Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantley, Max Homa and Xander Schauffele.
The biggest controversy surrounds Brooks Koepka, who now plays on the LIV Tour. His great play in the majors — won the PGA, T2 Masters and T17 and T64 in the Opens — should have him on the team and, while he’s eligible by the PGA of America, there’s a lot of negative feedback from Tour members.
So, who fills out the team? My choices would be Koepka, Jordan Speith, Cam Young, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns and Lucas Glover. Sorry Rickie Fowler. Gonna miss ya, Justin Thomas. Close but no cigar, Keegan Bradley. Where’s Tony Finau?
It’s been 30 years since Team USA won in Europe. Make that 31 years when play ends next month in Rome.
