I turned 78 last Sunday. It got me thinking about what a wonderful life I’ve had.
My first byline in a newspaper was in 1961, more than 62 years ago. I had no idea as a bright-eyed kid I’d still be pounding a keyboard, writing commentaries for sports radio. During those 62 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in TV, radio, and for newspapers. I’ve covered just about every major sport, including the biggest events. I’ve traveled from Los Angles to New York to Scotland — all on someone else’s dime.
I’ve met many of the best athletes and coaches in various sports and I played golf nearly every day. I was once described as the man who played more golf than anyone on the First Coast. Probably true.
I’ve traveled from Hawaii to Anchorage to Bermuda to the Panama Canal and throughout the Caribbean. Not bad for a college dropout who immediately became a sports editor in Wilson, N.C., near my hometown of Rocky Mount.
Although two wrecks have ravaged my body to the point I can no longer walk without assistance, I really can’t complain, thanks to my bride of 57 years and two wonderful sons, their spouses, and kids.
I still have my mind and more wonderful memories than most…
