My first look at a link course

todayJuly 18, 2023

Background

My first look at a link course reminded me of a cow or sheep pasture. And that’s exactly what they were before someone decided they’d make them suitable for that new game of golf. Hitler added the bunkers by bombing the UK during World War II.

Like most golfers, particularly those who’ve had the opportunity to play any of them, I’ve grown an appreciation of the brilliance of the Open rotation courses — except for Royal Hoylake, the site of this week’s Open. It looks rather drab. No distinguishing features at first glance. It totally lacks the charm of the nearby village of Hoylake, a few miles from Liverpool.

It’s the subtle features — slopes on the greens and fairways — that make it such a challenge. That’s how you explain six winners of the first eight Opens at Hoylake. Their names are Walter Hagan, Bobby Jones, Peter Thomson, Roberto DeVicenzo, Rory Mcllroy, and Tiger Woods.

Some insight into this year’s tournament: This is where Tiger came up with his famous “stinger” off the tee, using his driver only once.

My pick is Scottie Scheffeller Herschel.
