Football is a big man’s game. So why do the small players get the vast majority of the credit and attention?
Seldom has an NFL team won the Super Bowl without a stout offensive line, often one that survived the season without a significant injury. Backup quarterbacks have won rings. Ditto for 5th wide receivers or backup running backs.
Not backup offensive lines.
That is a prelude to telling Jaguars fans to remain cautious. They have the quarterback (and decent backup), the tight end, four proven wide receivers, a solid kick returner, a very good punter, and a dependable placekicker.
But the offensive line remains a question mark. The biggest, of course, is the rookie right tackle Anton Harrison. Left tackle Cam Robinson is on a 4-game suspension. Walker Little is his replacement, taking him away from left guard because Ben Batch is injured. The Jaguars are above average at center with Luke Fortner and right guard with Brandon Scherff.
If “the Big Uglies”, as they’ve been called, perform, then all of this preseason excitement could turn into postseason euphoria.
