LAMM AT LARGE: Cooper Kupp should be MVP

todayJanuary 25, 2022

Background

Who the heck is Cooper Kupp? Well, he may just be the best player in the National Football League. I know if I had a vote for MVP it’d go Kupp, not Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady or Jonathan Taylor.

Kupp plays wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams and this year won the pass-catchers triple crown: 145 catches, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns. He’s a good blocker, too. There’s been no slowing down in the playoffs, his 183 yards were key to the Rams upsetting the Bucs.

There’s nothing about Kupp that screams superstar or MVP. He’s 6-2, 194 and looks like another slow white guy. He arrived in the NFL with little fanfare, being the Rams’ 3rd-round draft pick in 2017 out of Eastern Washington, a good football school but not exactly Georgia or Alabama or Ohio State. The big schools didn’t have Kupp on their radar.

It would be crazy to predict any wide receiver equaling Kupp’s production. The Rams, however, realize what they have. Quarterback Matthew Stafford calls him “the heart and soul of our offense.”

I call him the MVP.
