If the LPGA had a higher profile, Lexi Thompson’s story would be the lead on Sports Center. (That used to be like being at the top of the front sports page.)
She has the yips. A bad, continuing case of the yips.
What makes her story intriguing is she remains one of the top players in women’s golf, contending most weeks She blew a 5-shot lead on the last 9 in the Women’s U.S. Open, missing one short putt after another. Last week she missed short putts on the last three holes and then missed a shorty on the 1st playoff hole, handing the title to Kelly Korda
No woman drives the ball as well as Lexi. Her iron play is second to none. She makes her share of 10-foot-plus putts. But inside 5 feet . . . well, it’s hard to watch.
The yips effect more golfers than athletes in other sports, but athletes in other sports aren’t immune. Remember baseball’s Rick Ankiel? Steve Sax? Basketball star Ben Simmons was shooting so poorly he quit shooting.
Are the yips nerves? Fundamentals? Voodoo? No one knows.
