LAMM AT LARGE: Market Size Isn’t a Guarantee To Win

todayJune 30, 2022

Background
When I heard a TV  commentator say the Colorado victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Stanley Cup was a victory for small markets, I was  take aback..
Denver a small market?
Not by my standards. It’s the No. 17 TV market. Tampa, by the way, is No. 11.
The size of the TV market is often over ruled by the depth of the owners’ pocket if those owners are willing to spend the money.
The perfect example is Green Bay. The Packers are an NFL power, but Green Bay is the No. 68 market. The reverse is New York half of the city’s 6 teams stink.
People point to Jacksonville as an example of struggling a small market. Isn’t it really about awful drafting, not TV market size?
Jacksonville is No. 47. That puts us ahead New Orleans, Memphis, Buffalo and Green Bay, others cities with pro franchises.
I understand the size of a city gives it an advantage, but it’s certainly not a guarantee.
