The PGA Tour’s slogan, “These Guys Are Good”, is outdated. It should be “These Guys Are Great”.
After three tournaments this year the winners are a combined 80 under par. At the same point last year that total was 69; the year before that 51. The courses admittedly are easy by Tour standards, but . . .
The players are getting better and there’s more of them. There are several reasons. Absolutely the equipment, especially the ball, is better. More young people are playing golf and many of them aspire to be professional golfers. Current golfers take physical conditioning seriously.
The money they can make is increasing by the boat loads.
More and more courses have become pitch-and-putt. Great old courses have become outdated.
This week is the Tour stop is in San Diego at Torrey Pines, one of the toughest layouts on Tour. Will scores go up? I hope so.
I like birdies and eagles as much as the next guy, but I don’t like it when we yawn at 65s and hardly acknowledge 62s as special.
