LAMM AT LARGE: Tampa Bay Rays are Doing Things Never Done Before

todayApril 27, 2023

Background

In case you’re among the many who haven’t been paying attention to Major League Baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays are going where few teams have ever gone.

The Rays are off to a 20-3 start, matching the ’87 Brewers. Of course, there’s still a lot to do. Note: those Brewers finished 3rd in their division.

But there’s nothing fluky about what’s going on with the Rays. As usual, they have an excellent pitching staff in spite of all the all-stars they sent packing when their salary demands increased. No team matches the Rays’ scouts when it comes to finding pitching talent.

They now have a lineup loaded with young stars. Shortstop Wander Franco has already signed a long-term deal. Leftfielder Randy Arozarena is off to another great start. Second baseman Brandon Lowe and third baseman Yandy Diaz each already have 6 homers and 15 RBIs.

I don’t expect these Rays to take their feet off the gas.
