The job of the College Football Playoff selection committee became more difficult last weekend.
All four of the unbeaten teams won but done were impressive. Two, Michigan and TCU, won on last-second fields. Top-rated Georgia was unimpressive beating a struggling Kentucky 16-6. Second-rated Ohio State got into a shootout with unranked Maryland.
The biggest loser was fifth-rated Tennessee. The Vols were embarrassed, 63-38, at South Carolina. North Carolina’s surprising loss against lowly Georgia Tech eliminated the Tar Heels.
Clemson is now a likely pick for the CFP. Out of the blue Alabama, LSU and Southern Cal are very much in the mix.
Ohio State plays Michigan this week. The loser, particularly if it’s the Wolverines, will be eliminated. TCU needs to be leery of Iowa State. Clemson plays South Carolina and its dangerous QB Spencer Rattler. Southern Cal plays a revived Notre Dame. Georgia, Alabama and LSU are all huge favorites.
Could two SEC teams make the 4-team playoff? Probably. Could three? Maybe.
Is there a better time of the year in college football than right now?
