LAMM AT LARGE: The Sad Side of Cut Day

todayAugust 31, 2022

Background
This is the toughest week of the year for NFL coaches.
No one enjoys firing people, and that exactly what each coach has to do 27 times this week. That’s 864 jobs. They have to call in men who’ve spent the spring and summer busting their butts and give them the bad news.
Fired or waived or traded or put on the practice squad.
The group consists mostly of undrafted rookies and street free agents, But there’ll be a handful of veterans, some starters, who find their world turned upside down.
Some these players will catch of with other clubs and that means another player has to be sent packing. And there are the small handful of these players wind up being on other rosters and become stars. That’s a smaller number.
There are 1,664 players jobs, but sadly for the players and coaches there’s never enough.
And that’s why every coach I’ve ever known treads this week. Even Grinch of NFL coaches, Bill Belichick.
