Forging into existence in 1995, the Jaguars’ entry into the NFL was a success story. Thanks to a well-thought-out personnel team and a coaching staff headed by Tom Coughlin, this team quickly became among the top founding members of the professional league.
The team has assembled some of the most distinguished players in its short history. Despite not containing any Hall of Fame worthy names, their roster contains several individuals with respectable arguments for the highest individual football honor. In the late 1990s, these talented contributors powered their way to two AFC Championships.
Tony Brackens
Role: Defensive End
Years active: 1996-2003
Tony Brackens was drafted in the second round of 1996 and didn’t have the best start, playing limited time in his first three seasons. But eventually, he improved his on-field performance and received decent standings in prop bets. Brackens achieved impressive success in the face of restricted opportunities, tallying a total of 17.5 sacks in his breakthrough season. Subsequently, the defensive end was selected into the Pro Bowl due to his 12.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles in the following campaign.
Despite his relatively short career, Brackens left an indelible mark on the game, securing a Jaguars franchise record that would stand the test of time – 55 sacks and 28 forced fumbles. To this day, he retains the distinction of being Jacksonville’s all-time leading pass-rusher, in second place is Joel Smeenge, with a mere 34 sacks.
Daryl Smith
Role: Linebacker
Years active: 2004-2012
Daryl Smith, who was drafted in the second round by the Jaguars in 2004, developed into a leading player on their defense for almost 10 years. His contributions exceeded all initial expectations.
Jacksonville’s hidden star, an incredible 4-3 outside linebacker, Smith gave an energetic performance in 2011 – exhibiting outstanding numbers in a variety of categories. Though his accomplishments spoke volumes, Smith was a modest and unassuming leader who let his play do the talking.
His career with the Jaguars had a bittersweet finish as, during his contract year, a groin injury left him off the field for most of 2012. However, he left as the franchise’s all-time leading tackler and with a lasting legacy.
John Henderson
Role: Defensive Tackle
Years active: 2002-2009
Tom Coughlin drafted him as his final first-rounder for the 2002 season and put him together with Stroud to produce a magnificent defensive tackle tandem for Jacksonville. Showing incredible resiliency, he started 120 out of 124 contests in eight seasons and earned two Pro Bowl nods as an alternate.
For eight years, without fail, Maurice Jones-Drew was a presence in the Jacksonville Jaguars lineup. His sixteen-game consecutive streak spanned until 2007 before age and injury began to take its toll. Though he was given a chance to prove himself again with the Raiders post-Jaguars, MJD did not let up as he was signed on right away following his release.
Jimmy Smith
Role: Wide Receiver
Years active: 1995-2005
Following a rough draft by the Cowboys, Smith endured a series of travails, including a near-fatal sickness, prior to finding achievement as a Jaguar. Initially off to a slow start, he blossomed into an invincible presence on the field, consecutively accruing over 1000 yards in seven straight seasons and eventually surpassing this accomplishment nine times in total.
Smith and McCardell created a dynamic partnership, with Smith’s big-play ability helping them both rack up over 2,000 receiving yards per year. His finest performance happened in 1999, where he managed 116 receptions for an impressive 1,636 yards. With such statistics, it’s easy to see why Smith is still one of the Bucs’ most successful receivers of all time; collecting 862 catches, 12,287 PY and 69 TD in total.
Smith stands out as a giant among his peers concerning his feats while playing for the Jaguars in the late 90s. Without any question, his contributions and impact on the team’s success cannot be overlooked.
Mark Brunell
Role: Quarterback
Years active: 1995-2003
Mark Brunell’s Football career is a landmark for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 1995, Brunell was traded to Jacksonville from the GB Packers, a 5th round pick at the time. For nine seasons, he served as their inaugural quarterback and he produced impressive results. His talent and leadership enabled them to reach three Pro Bowls and four playoffs, making it as far as the AFC Championship game twice.
Brunell had a standout performance with the Jacksonville Jaguars, establishing team records with 25,698 PY and 144 TD. With the combined talents of Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell as part of a strong offensive strategy, he achieved an impressive 20,000+ in PY.
Tony Boselli
Role: Left Tackle
Years active: 1995-2003
Tony Boselli, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ inaugural 1995 draft selection, stands as one of their greatest picks to date. With his impressive size of 6’7″ and 322 pounds, Boselli was a powerful presence at tackle. His ability to defend QB Mark Brunell’s ‘blind side’ was unquestionably key to the team’s offensive success in running and passing games.
Boselli stamped his authority on the NFL by outshining star defensive end Bruce Smith. Just six seasons in the league saw Boselli snap up five Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors, though his career was prematurely ended by shoulder issues in 2002. Nonetheless, his place in the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team cements him as the most outstanding player in Jaguars history.
