ACC and SEC media days revealed a mixture of stars, veterans and promising young leaders.

Background

I’ve enjoyed the coverage the last two weeks by this station at SEC and ACC media days. Excellent interviews of dozens of coaches and players by our guys.

And now an observation. Make of it what you will.

The ACC players — UNC QB  Drake Maye and Clemson center Will Putnam for two — came across much better than the SEC players. Their answers were well thought out and well delivered.

The schools are asked to bring their star players, but the coaches pick some players as a reward whether or not they’re stars. You assume the players are prepared and won’t be intimidated by all of the attention. That’s not always the case.

Based on some excellent interviews of the coaches — I really thought Georiga’s Kirby Smart came across well — both conferences revealed a mixture of stars, veterans and promising young leaders.

I expect the SEC to have seven, maybe eight, top-25 teams led by Georgia and LSU. In the ACC, it looks stronger than in recent seasons. I expect Clemson to be back in the national championship mix, along with FSU. Miami is an emerging program. UNC may have a nationally top-5 quarterback.

We’ll find out the answers soon enough. The season starts this month.
