Now that training camp has opened, Jaguars fans have every right to be excited about the upcoming season now that tight end Evan Engram has been signed to a long-term contract.
I think the tight end is the second most important offensive position — the quarterback is No. 1, obviously — in the NFL. Without a stud TE, teams often break down inside the red zone. And while Engram was returning with a franchise tag, he wasn’t happy. Now he is with a three-year, $41 million deal.
The Jaguars should be among the best offensive teams in the league. Trevor Lawrence is already a top-10 QB and may soon be top 5. With Engram joining wideouts Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley, and Zay Jones, how many teams have a better-receiving group? They are solid at running back and the offensive line has potential. The kicking game and special teams are strong.
Now, of course, the Jaguars with its shaky defense will have to outscore opponents if they are to return to the playoffs.
