I don’t know much about soccer. Just the basics, sorta. I probably don’t watch two hours of soccer in a year.
But I do plan to watch as much as I can of the Women’s World Cup that starts today in Australia and New Zealand. Team USA makes its ’23 debut Saturday against Vietnam. Gotta figure out the time difference.
The World Cup promises to be more interesting than it has in a while. The USA is going for its third straight title with practically a new roster. Injuries and retirements have deleted many of the players we’ve grown to know. It may be Team USA’s youngest roster ever. There are veterans — Alex Morgan, Becky Saunbrunn, and goalie Alyssa Naener — but for the most part it’s new World Cup players. Don’t worry that much. The USA has developed a solid farm system.
Meanwhile, the rest of the World is catching up. England, France, and Sweden are all solid contenders to dethrone USA. Don’t ignore host Australia and Spain in the 32-nation field.
An American victory will be its finest hour.
